How to Plan for Your Fitted Bedroom

How to Plan Your Fitted Bedroom

When faced with an empty space you intend to fit fitted wardrobes it can be a little daunting, the prospect of one incorrect measurement and the cabinets will not fit will be a costly error. At Doors Sincerely we are here to help, we have been supplying and designing fitted bedrooms for years and the following general rules should help take away your worries, follow this guide and you will be well on the way to confidently planning your new fitted bedroom.

Measuring: customers are always wary of providing measurements, our advice take your time, follow this guide step by step and you will see it is it really isn't as bad as you thought.

First measure the height of the room, in many cases a room's height will vary across its span and for this reason you should measure in three places, as per the image below. Once you have these measurements apply the smallest to your plan, this will ensure the height of your cabinets will fit even with a wonky ceiling.

Now measure the width of the area, across the top, the middle and at the bottom, again use the smallest measurement for your design.

The next consideration is depth, it is important to ensure you have sufficent depth and that any obstructions are considered, in the example below we have had to account for the 10mm overlap of the window sill and the protrusion of the radiator from the wall. If wardobes and drawers are fitted too close to these areas they can stop a door or drawer from opening, note these areas on your plans.

From the measurements we have obtained we have established:

Our Fitted Wardrobes Will Fit An Area: Height: 2398mm x Width: 3998mm x Depth: 600mm

We cannot stress enough how important this stage is, take your time, make sure you are happy with your dimensons

When working out the height of the units remember that your wardrobes are supplied flat packed and will usuaally be assembled on their backs, to get the wardrobes upright and to avoid hitting the ceiling it is important to reduce the overall height of the wardrobes by a minimum of 80mm.

The design shows that the space at the end of the run of cabinets and at the top of the wardrobes have been filled to acieve this use a colour matched infil panel. Note the worktop for the chest of drawers extends across the top of the base infil panel.

Once you know if you need wardrobes, chest of drawer or shelving you can establish which size units will fit the area, the plan below shows that every element contained in the run has been calculated including additional end panels and infil panels.

Fitted Wardrobe Design

Designing Your Fitted Wardrobes:

Internal Storage: now you know the area you have to work with you can start to design your fitted wardrobes, you will need to consider what you intend to store within the cabinets. Are you intending on using an area as a dressing table or a work station, do you need internal pull out drawers or shelving? Will the cabinets need to be standard or made to measure?

There are a wealth of standard storage solutions which does keep costs down but if your area requires it fitted wardrobes and cabinets can be made bespoke, this ensures your design is not compromised and every inch of space is utilised.

Assess what you intend to store in the cabinets ie: will you have more hanging space or do you need shelves for folded clothes, will you need storage for suitcases, an area for socks and underwear. Remember if you need any assistance call us we have years of experience planning and designing fitted wardrobes and bedroom cabinets and can also assist with a CAD so you can visulise your design before a single door or cabinet is purchased.

External Design: you have worked out your layout, made sure your cabinets will fit, all that is left is selecting the exterior finish of your new wardrobes. When you look at the many door designs and finishes it can feel like a daunting task but our advice is concentrate on the doors you like and ignore the ones you don't, it removes alot of clutter from the decison making. If you are thinking Shaker doors then this will reduce your selction down, likewise if you intend to keep your design contemporary the more traditonal designs do not need to be considered. So decide if your room is going to be a contemporary or traditional design. Likewise with colour look at the colours that will work in your room, it is pointless getting wood samples if you are pulled towards a solid colour, it just makes the selection process hard work.

Now you know everything will fit, the storage meets your requirements it is time to choose wardrobe doors and colours, take you time to request colour samples to ensure the finish will fulfill your design and will work with the light in the room,

You are happy with the final design, the internal layout will accomodate all your stuff, the exterior door design and colour selection will suit your room all that is left is to decide whether to bring in a professional fitter or if you will attempt to DIY. The only advice we can give on this is assess your capabilites if you think you are up to the task, have the tools to complete the job go for it.
